Merry Culkin Keatmas! This is of course our follow up podcast to the LiveWatch of Home Alone, in which we take issue with our old pal Roger Ebert’s dour review of the film, trade trivia about the film, and in general talk about why it’s one of our very favorite Christmas films. We’re not done! Not by a long shot. Come back next week as we put the Keaton back in Keatmas with Batman Returns!
It feels like we’re at a big crossroads here for our relationship with AMC’s The Walking Dead, as we watch “How It’s Gotta Be”. What do you do with a show you don’t really enjoy watching when it eliminates one of the biggest reasons you’ve been watching it, and you have no real hope for improvement? Honestly, we don’t know, we’re going to have to do a lot of off season soul searching to decide what form our coverage is going to take going forward. We’ll be coming back next week for a mid-season wrap up if you got more things you need to get off your chest. We’ll see what happens from there.
The latest episode of USA Network’s Mr. Robot, “eps3.8_stage3.torrent” manages to raise a lot of questions that we’re hoping to get at least some answers to for the finale next week. Has Elliot really managed to “own” the Dark Army, or is this an elaborate rope a dope once again by White Rose? Is Phillip Price really out of plays? Who’s driving the van that picks up the now super crazy Angela? Is Dom and Darlene secretly working together to out Santiago as Dark Army’s rat inside the FBI? And for the love of God, what exactly is White Rose up to?! See you next week where we can find out together!
We have seen The Disaster Artist, the behind the scenes look at the creation of The Room, which is quite possibly the worst film ever made. Based on the book of the same name, the brothers Franco play Tommy and Greg in a way that manages to feel honest, sympathetic, and most of all very funny. It is frustrating that there is so little there, there. There is no big revealing answers that make any sense about the deeply weird and enigmatic Tommy, and the friendship between him and Greg also feels like the barest sketch possible to make the film work. But it does work, and like Ed Wood before it, manages to make an amazing movie out of a dog turd. It’s an amazing alchemic work, spinning gold from lead. Go see it, regardless of how familiar you are with the source material. You’re going to be in for a good time.

The Merry Culkin Keatmas rages on with our podcast that brings the Keaton to Keatmas, 1998’s box office bomb, Jack Frost. The film isn’t great, but we managed to extract a surprising amount of fun and holiday cheer from it. Enjoy! And don’t forget Lunch coming this Friday! AMC’s The Walking Dead presents for us a perfect storm of mullet, trash people, rapid onset morgalizing, and terrible action sequences. Except in the actual perfect storm it was two terrible things coming together to make a larger terrible thing, and in “Time for After” it’s four. Regardless, George Clooney and Marky Mark ain’t making it out alive. The question Jim and I are left with is, do we go down with the ship? Or accept coast guard rescue? Honestly, I’ve kind of lost the metaphor at this point, but if Gimple can do it, so can I!
USA Network’s Mr. Robot offers us a quieter, more introspective, but no less fascinating episode this week. A possible turning point for the series and our protagonist, as told through a meditation on suicide and death as seen through the lens of deletion. And if the material didn’t grab you, my god, the visuals. Sam goes all out and widens the scope to “Cinema” both literally and stylistically offering us one lush and well crafted scene after another. Just two more episodes to come, what can Esmail and company do to keep raising the narrative and artistic stakes? See you next week to find out!
Jim and A.Ron are not sure whether to laugh or cry with the latest from AMC’s The Walking Dead, “The King, The Widow, and Rick”. On the one hand, this is a garbage show, now populated with literally, for real, garbage people. On the other hand, Rosita vaporized a guy with a rocket launcher. In a warehouse. From 30 feet away. That’s garbage, but it’s funny garbage. We break down this fiasco as per usual with supporting fire from our fellow fans in the feedback section.
Jim and A.Ron agree that this latest episode of USA Network’s Mr. Robot, “Eps3.6fredrick&tanya.chk”, was pretty good, but on little else beyond that. We are in violent disagreement over the direction of Angela and Tyrell, but that just makes for an exciting podcast where naked hostility seems to be lying in wait around every corner. But whether or not you think Tyrell is an actual human or if Angela is a horrifying baby person suddenly, there is a lot to talk about and discuss. White Rose dunks on Phillip, Leon blazes up to Knight Rider, Irving tells Mr. Robot how it is, beautifully filmed desert vistas that would bring a tear to even Vince Gilligan’s eye, and we get closure on Trenton and Mobley. All great stuff, and it puts the show in fine shape as it heads into the seasons final act. See you next week!
