Hi everybody!  A.Ron here.  If you want to know more about Jim and me, we’ve done a series of Q&A sessions over the years.  You can access them all right here.  We also did a fun little Reddit AMA.  I will attempt to answer some frequently asked questions below…

Why “Bald Move”?

Jim and I grew up as huge nerds.  Gaming of both the board and video variety as well as Star Trek were ways of life.  Frequently when an opponent would do something rash, unexpected, or bold, we would cast a steely gaze across the table and say, “that’s a bald move, Picard.”  Because, you know, Picard was bald, terrible puns are funny, and now it’s the name of our network.

Our Story

Jim and I grew up together in the podunk town of Mooresville, IN.  We’ve been friends for over 20 years.  It is a friendship born of a shared experience growing up in a cult, our love of sci-fi, video games, board games, and curiosity about the world and larger universe.  We have many times over the years collaborated on creative, personal, and business ventures, with Bald Move to our mutual surprise being the one that has stuck.  How did we end up here?

In the winter of 2009, Jim, over a round of Magic: The Gathering, told his friends that he was moving to Chicago, and we all conspired ways we could keep in touch.  You know how it usually goes.  Someone moves away, and everyone has the best intentions of skyping, texting, emailing, facebooking, what have you, but time marches on and suddenly you find yourself drifting apart.  We needed a plan.  At one point, says I, “Hey, didn’t you used to do a podcast?  A weekly show where we just get together and bullshit about geeky topics would be kind of fun.”  And it was true.  Jim was a true podcast pioneer, starting a little video game podcast called “Gong Radio” years before.

And so after a few rounds of beers and brainstorming for a URL, BaldMove.com was started on March 24th, 2010. The launch was timed to coincide with the first PAX East event and the release of a PAX-related episode of Blue Yonder. For 77 episodes we ran a weekly show.  The sound quality started off terrible.  Co-hosts came and went.  But we never missed a deadline, and we honed our sound and podcast techniques , and  had a great time doing so.

However, we never amassed a sizable audience. By this time Jim had moved back to Indy, the initial itch that podcast had scratched no longer existed.  We had plateaued at a few hundred weekly listeners, which was nice, but we were getting restless and felt it was time to move on. Before we did, we decided to launch a new podcast to talk about one of our favorite shows, Mad Men.  But we weren’t ready to go when the new season started, so we kept on keeping on.  Jim was really excited about The Walking Dead’s series premiere, being a huge zombie fan, and I was game to go in as a sort of horror-virgin, but… for reasons that aren’t clear to either of us we weren’t quite ready to jump into that one, and so we kept on keeping on. Then, Breaking Bad season four was looming, the personal and professional stars aligned just so, and on July 18th, 2011, “Breaking Good” was launched.  Our mission was to deliver a passionate, fan-first, no kiss ass, totally honest podcast for the best show on TV.  “If we get a thousand fans by the end of this season, we should keep doing this.”

We got five thousand in the first week.

Now, six years, dozens of shows, thousands of podcasts, and millions of downloads later, we have the very good fortune to be able to work on Bald Move as our full times jobs.  Podcasting out of a small studio in Cincinnati, OH, we generate hundreds of hours of video, audio, and gaming content each year.  Our mission is the same, to deliver passionate, fan-first, honest commentary on our favorite television shows.  We have been joined by legions of fellow fans world wide, and their humor, intelligence, and generous support allows us to keep on keeping on.  We are incredibly proud of Bald Move and the community that has formed around it, and we thank you for all the help you’ve given us over the years.
