We’re trying to walk a fine line here. On the one hand, we are impressed as we can be with the quality, pacing, and storytelling on display throughout season two of AMC’s “Better Call Saul”. Heck, we even really like the finale, episode 210, “Klick”. But we also have a few problems with how they’re going about doing what they do, and worry that the mounting coincidences, reliance on karmic timing and a fairly limp reveal for the finale will eventually undermine the enterprise. And we have a giant mailbag full of opinions from you and your fellow fans.
The latest season of HBO’s Game of Thrones is nigh at hand, and thus we resume our “watch”! What does the show look like now that it is forced to carry on in absence of new books by creator George R.R. Martin? How will our spoiler section change and adapt? Where are all of our beloved characters as we left them, and what do we think will happen next? All these questions and many more are covered, and don’t forget; we’ll start our SpoiLore podcast this Friday with a special spoiler preview edition, where we’ll speculate with in-depth book knowledge and cover casting clues and spoilers from the trailer. We feel like “Banshee” is well and truly back this week with some nicely executed action set pieces including a pulse pounding foot chase as well as a double/triple cross snipe-fest, they payoff of which was good enough that we’ll both forgive a little Fat Au Ex Machina. Episode 403, “Job, featured bombshell reunions, revelations, and some hot former-neo-nazi sex, and we get around to discussing it all.
Special thanks to Glenn Seubert for commissioning this podcast on the 1964 British film “Zulu”. Directed by Cy Endfield and starring Stanley Baker and a very young Michael Caine, it depicts a fictionalized version of a real life stand off between 100 British soldiers and 4,000 Zulu warriors in the battle for South Africa. The film is gorgeous in it’s look and especially color palette, and the lead performances by Baker and Caine are interesting as two soldiers vying for power and making tough decisions under an extremely daunting challenge. We both cry out for more cultural and historical context for this film, and while Jim had problems with some aspects of the film being dated, I enjoyed it for the throw back to a classic age of cinema that it is.
Episode 209 of AMC’s “Better Call Saul”, entitled “Nailed”, is superlative, and takes us on quite the intense and unexpected emotional rollercoaster. We can’t wait to see what goes down in the finale next week! But first things first, we talk about Mike’s snatching a total moral defeat from the jaws of victory, Chuck’s crazy pants theory that just happens to be true, Kim’s very nuanced and perhaps conditional acceptance of Jimmy’s wily ways, and much more, including tons of great feedback from our fellow fans.
You all had a lot to say about the finale of season six of The Walking Dead, and about the season as a whole.
