Tomorrow is the 10th anniversary of Christopher Nolan’s dreamscape heist film, Inception. We covered it immediately after its initial release and 10 years later we’re back to do it all over again. In an episode of The Walking Dead that’s good enough to please no one, it’s all about whether you’re going to make Negan a martyr and whether Daryl and Rick can climb out of their desperate pit of emotion. I dunno. Daryl’s sidewalls are pretty high and Rick’s roots are as shaky as Negan’s grip on sanity.
This week we take a look at Ryan Coogler’s first feature film, Fruitvale Station, about the 2009 murder of Oscar Grant. It is competently directed by Coogler but the impeccable performances by recognizable names such as Octavia Spencer and Michael B. Jordan, as well as its tragically-evergreen relevance, are what really make the film a must-see.
Right now there’s a writer sitting somewhere in Georgia, maybe Hollywood, or more likely hell, thinking about what a great metaphor this episode’s tomato was. It’s probably the same writer who was self-impressed when they decided that Gabriel was an ‘A’. Both of those writers suck.
We couldn’t figure out what either meant or why we should care about any of it, which makes this episode a B+ by The Walking Dead standards.
After we announced last week that we’d be covering Fruitvale Station, Spike Lee went and dropped his latest joint, Da 5 Bloods, on Netflix, to rave reviews.
