Napoleon (2023)

Napoleon is a movie that can’t decide on which story it wants to tell. The storyline of the steamy romance between Napoleon and his Empress Josephine bucks against the scenes of war. The visuals are gorgeous, the story is muddy. What is Ridley Scott trying to tell us, if anything, about this cantankerous emperor?

The Holdovers (2023)

The Holdovers is a delightful movie with emotional depths that isn’t seen often in recent cinema. Alexander Payne has crafted a heartfelt movie about a group of boys left at boarding school over Christmas break. Paul Giamatti stars as the curmudgeon tasked with watching them. The film explores the depths of joy, despair, and hilarity. It’s been called an “instant Christmas classic”, and Jim and A.Ron agree.

Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)

Martin Scorsese is back at the ripe old age of 80 to spin another one of his gangster tales. Set in 1920s Oklahoma, Killers of the Flower Moon depicts the injustices suffered by the indigenous poeples of America through the lens of one family’s maniacal and murderous attempts to steal their rights to oil found on their land.

The Creator (2023)

If you’re a fan of robots, AI, Asimov-ian scifi, this might be the movie for you. Following on the all-too-relevant theme of AI, The Creator tells the story of a future where a large part of the world has embraced augmented humans, and the other hates it. It’s visually arresting and sometimes tonally unbalanced, but it will leave you with plenty to think about. And it was a struggle to get into the theater, so thank Jim and A.Ron for braving the difficulties.

Oppenheimer (2023)

Christopher Nolan’s new film is terrifying on many levels. No doubt you’ve heard of Oppenheimer the scientist, but are you ready to get to know the human being? The film comes at the issue of the atomic bomb from many angles. Nolan uses his sci-fi-esque style to breathe life into the man who would become death. If you’re looking for a nuanced look at the birth of the atomic bomb, and the minds behind it, this is the movie for you.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

This podcast, should you choose to listen, will recount the adventure of Jim and A.Ron watching M:I 7. Zooooom! Tom Cruise runs faster than he’s ever run before. Marvel alumni, Hayley Atwell and Pom Klementieff, join the cast. There are great stunts and fun performances by characters new and old to the franchise. What impossible mission will Ethan Hunt tackle this time?

Asteroid City (2023)

It’s a movie that is so Wes Anderson, you’ll be bathing in pastel colors and meta dialogue for the full 1 hour and 44 minute run. This movie will ask, but never answer, a handful of questions. Is this movie profound? Is the audience meant to understand it? What is that on Jason Schwartzman’s forehead?

Fast X (2023)
