Jude from New Zealand shows some homeland pride by selecting the incendiary Kiwi film from 1994, “Once Were Warriors”, for her commissioned podcast pick. Directed by Lee Tamahori and starring Temuera Morrison and Rena Owen, it features a soul destroying portrait of life for a Maori family living in the slums of Auckland. The picture pulls no punches, and yet manages to be thought provoking, sympathetic, and even uplifting and hopeful, assuming you calibrate your definition of “uplifting” and “hopeful” to David “The Wire” Simon settings. We simply are blown away by the performances of everyone in this film, particularly Morrison who plays the extremely charismatic, extremely violent Jake “the Muss”, and are intrigued by the examination of domestic violence, crime, and racial issues as seen through the very distinct lens of New Zealand.
The Walking Dead episode 614, “Twice As Far” takes a few strange character turns, before it jumps tracks and barrels out of control straight into Awesomeville Station. We discuss questionable decisions made while babysitting the town’s medic, Eugene’s admirable wearing of proper pants and brilliant strategy for Alexandria’s defense and trade, Carol tragically falling victim to “Morgalizing”, the shocking return of Daryl’s crossbow, and the bite heard ’round the world. All this, plus tons of feedback and our spoiler section for all your prognosticating needs. See you next week!
Episode 202 of Netflix’s “Daredevil” keeps the pedal to the metal as we get yet another titanic Punisher vs. Daredevil sequence, this time featuring a greatly weakened and perhaps fool hearty Matt, who still hasn’t recovered from the damage inflicted from the previous battle. To add to his troubles, his friends are justifiably worried for his life, his armorer seems to be balky about keeping his suit in fighting trim, and his client is being shafted by a shifty D.A. Still, the two rivals are learning a great deal about each other, which can’t be good… can it?

Cronos is Guillermo del Toro’s first feature film, and while it’s a bit rough around the edges it’s the type of film that sticks with you. With macabre imagery, morbid curiosity, and Ron Perlman’s broken nose, there’s a lot to take in. So wind up the golden bug, sleep in a toy box, and rip your skin off. Let’s go!
Come watch the episode with us. If it’s bad, we’ll make fun of it. If it’s good… well, we’ll still make fun of it, just a little less seriously.
Daredevil season two has started! We’ll be watching and reviewing a new episode every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from here on out until we’ve finished the whole thing. As we rejoin our heroes in episode 201, “Bang”, local gangs have been jockeying to occupy the power vacuum left by the Kingpin’s exit last season, and Matt might have new competition in the “get tough on crime” game.
Another Friday, another Lunch with Jim & A.Ron. We’re starting at 1pm so lets go!
