Why is Mr. Feeny a Car? - S02E03 – MacGyver (1985): “Pilot”

This week we take a look at Big Dick Anderson’s Magnum Opus, MacGyver. MacGyver was James Bond with Bill Nye the Science Guy sensibilities, and when Jim heard he was the subject of our next Feeny, he had to join. This is a great introduction to the character and his schtick, as Mac has to travel to an underground bunker that has suffered a catastrophic bombing, and now threatens to leak powerful acids into the local water table. It’s up to Mac, with a busted pair of binocs, some chocolate bars, a gram or two of pure sodium, and a few cold capsules to save the day. As a bonus, I tell the tale of how MacGyver nearly blinded a kid back in the third grade!

Why is Mr. Feeny a Car? - S02E02 – Airwolf (1984) Pilot: “Shadow of the Hawke”

Boy, these shows really loved their feature length pilots, didn’t they? This week’s shadowy flight takes Jay and A.Ron into the world of a real man’s: Stringfellow Hawke. Stoic, heroic, traumatized war vet, appreciator of fine wine and finer art, musically gifted, philosophically complicated, mysterious and irresistible to women, stunt pilot by day and mercenary pilot by night. It’s A LOT. Airwolf is still badass, the villain is campy fun, Archangel is cool as coolwhip in his ice cream suit and patchglasses, but nearly every scene without a helicopter is deader than Gaddafi, who may or may not appear in this episode. Btw, did you know you can like, die, just by staying outside too long? It’s TRUE!

Why is Mr. Feeny a Car? - S02E01 – The A-Team Pilot: “Mexican Slayride”

We’re back for season two, where we’ll be sampling from the very best of 80s action television as we watch the pilots where all these stories begin. This week, we’re with the A-Team, who from what we gather are an elite team of special forces con-men, as they attempt to run a mercenary co-op with a side hustle of Hollywood studio backlot misadventures. Things get a little rough in patches, but the theme song is rad and Mr. T is still awesome.

The Podcast Maneuver - S03E03 – Seventeen Seconds

Picard delivers a good episode! Between Picard’s new family members, Worf’s one-liners, and the weak medical practices, this episode has lots to unpack. When you’re dealing with a show with decades of history and plot twists both cool and nonsensical, it provides great theory fodder. In addition to their usual commentary, Jim and A.Ron have a theory crafting session that will have you laughing.

The Podcast Maneuver - S02E10 – Farewell – Feedback

The magnetic containment unit experienced core meltdown, and the feedback is smoking. With the madness of this season it’s no surprise your feedback covers the gamut from bad borg face effects to the nonsensical character arc closures. What do we want in season three? A full cast reunion sharing a scene together. We don’t want Patrick Stewart to catch covid, but when else are we going to have the chance to see this?
Hailing frequencies are going dark. We’re not planning Picard Season 3 episode coverage. But if you want to hear us talk about it, consider supporting us to gain access to our premium Off the Clock episodes.

Set phasers to mildly entertained. There were a few good moments sprinkled amongst the madness. Q and Picard’s relationship comes to a somewhat satisfying end with Picard now unshackled from his past decisions. The road getting here was rough, but was it worth the journey? And A.Ron has been cured of Jurati syndrome. Thank you for all the sympathy cards.
Picard Season 3 episode by episode coverage is TBD. Who’s looking forward to the reunion next season?

“Don’t make me defend this show.” A.Ron five times during this episode.
We’re glad to see that elements of this show speak to some people. But when it’s not speaking to us, it’s confusing us. Don’t miss Picard: The Lost Episode, a dramatic reading from A.Ron of a fan spec script that explains this madness. Before you get too giddy about the next Star Trek shows, it’s the same creative team from Picard behind the other shows.

A.Ron is showing strong signs of Jurati-syndrome. And Picard is showing strong signs of “jumping the shark” syndrome. With the Borg rampage continuing and more battles being introduced into the show, Jim and ARon have a couple of useful suggestions. Who else wants to see these guys direct an episode of Picard? Though the show is a shadow of itself, we see a glimmer of hope for season three with the exciting cast announcement. But until then, we don’t have high hopes for how season two will end.
