Jim and A.Ron sign off the Breaking Bad airwaves until sometime in November 2014, but we have a few things to say before we do. We talk about Breaking Bad’s relationship to Fargo, a listener calls BS on giving Walt a pass on his “authentic” decision making, and we do a deep dive on Hank and Walt’s relationship as we play a little bit of “what if” in the spoiler section.
Welcome back to The Speakeasy, where we consider episode 503 of Boardwalk Empire, “What Jesus Said.” Jim and A.Ron talk about the surfeit of “boys” and “uckys” in Boardwalk, smooth dialog, the sad state of Nucky’s nightclub in the hands of Mickey Doyle, Joe Kennedy’s teetotaling, childhood sweethearts, the return of Marge, and theorize on…
In their recap of 1993’s The Secret Garden, Kelly & Tom are thrilled to find that it’s a darn good movie, possibly thanks to executive producer Francis Ford Coppola, who is also Kelly’s close personal friend. The film itself features Maggie Smith earning all 5 Maggie Smiths as Mrs. Medlock, Kate Maberly as the kid lit…
Jim and A.Ron finish season one of Breaking Bad with the finale, “A No-Rough-Stuff-Type Deal”. We talk about the sweetness of forbidden fruits, the insanity of Marie, Jr’s perviness, and Breaking Bad’s first Walt-Jesse heist. All this, tons of your great feedback, and a robust spoiler section.
Jim and A.Ron talk about SyFy’s new Z Nation, Doomsday Preppers, Wicked Tuna, and A.Ron catches up Jim on what he’s been missing on The Knick and The Bridge.
Special thanks to Karolina Ljungström, who decided to have us take on one of her favorite films, “Quills”. “Quills” was released in 2000, and was directed by Phillip Kaufman, and starred Geoffrey Rush, Kate Winslet, Joaquin Phoenix, Michael Caine, and Stephen Moyer. It is a period piece loosely set around the last years of the Marquis de Sade as he languishes in a French asylum for the insane. The film has Jim and A.Ron pondering the role of art in society, how the life choices and artist makes influences how we feel about art, and how madness and genius are related.
Hey there and welcome to the final podcast for Season One of HBO’s The Leftovers! Jim and A.Ron talk at length about the differences between the book and the TV show, consider tons of listener feedback, look ahead to the next season, and much more. Interesting article on Vulture discussing with Tom Perrotta (author of…
Jim and A.Ron break down a very “boardwalky” episode of Boardwalk Empire, “The Good Listener”. We talk about the Kennedy Family Empire, speculate on who Gillian is corresponding with, marvel at Stephen Graham’s performance as the coke/syphilis addled Capone, and ponder how Nucky’s childhood informs our understanding of Nucky the man. All this, plus your…
Hey there, A.Ron here with a very special commissioned podcast with a unique history and focus. First, thanks to Andrew Stannard for using Subbable to make this all possible, and for working with us patiently on the format of the podcast.
Andrew wanted us to talk about The Wire. The problem is, I’ve got massive plans for a Ultimate Badass Criterion Sapphire The Wire Podcast, and I didn’t want to take his money to release an inferior version. So, we compromised. We’d record a podcast about his favorite character, Omar Little, and we’d highlight two episodes that showcase a particular facet of the character, all without doing any major spoilers. I selected episode 206, “All Prologue”, and 306, “Homecoming”, to show off Omar at his best, and Omar at one of his lowest points. Along the way Jim and I gush about The Wire, why we love it, why it can be hard at times to love, why Omar is such an important character for The Wire in general and pop culture at large, and talk about our favorite moments from these two episodes. I also divulge some details about my upcoming The Wire podcast series, and why it’s taking so damn long.
