Days of Thunder is the semi-dramatic car-racing cousin of Talladega Nights. Director Tony Scott has helmed other high caliber projects such as Top Gun and Crimson Tide. It’s written by Robert Towne who penned Chinatown and Mission Impossible 1 and 2. So why did this movie turn out to be silly? Well, it could be the relationship between Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. Maybe it’s Michael Rookers’ lack of caution with his brain bleed. Whatever it was, it didn’t stop Robert Ebert from breaking the ethos of Tom Cruise down to a science.
What a difference a word, and one excellent writer / director, makes! The Suicide Squad is a complete 360 from the steaming pile of garbage that was Suicide Squad. It’s fun, action-packed, ultra-violent and everything we would hope to see from the evolution of subversive superhero movies.
Gather round the campfire to hear us tell the tale of the gunfight at the box office corral where Kevin Costner and Kurt Russell dueled to settle which of them could create the better Wyatt Earp film. Though Costner started with his hand on the script, it was the faster, wilier Russell who prevailed in the end, buying up all the cowboy gear in Hollywood and raking in the dough while Costner’s “Wyatt Earp” lay dead in the street.
Seriously, that’s exactly how it happened. The production of Tombstone is a tale for the ages and we’re here to tell it. Join us on the podcast. It’s a good one!
Thanks again to Brent for this fantastic commission, without which I never would have gotten around to watching this classic western.
