501 – “Live Free or Die” – Breaking Good

So this is kind of awkward.  Months of waiting, weeks of intense anticipation, days of breathless excitement, and then the premier came, and it was kind of just… okay?  Okay on the Breaking Bad scale happens to put it better than just about any show on the air, but still.  What did we like?  What didn’t we like?  What did we learn, and what new questions were raised?  And what did you, the fellow Breaking Bad fan have to say?  This one was long, as we had a shocking amount of email to plow through, but we hope it was worth it, and look forward to seeing how this fascinating show manages to work its way through it’s fifth and final season.

As always, please feel free to email us, and follow us on twitter or facebook.  If you’ve enjoyed the work we’ve done this season, please use ourAmazon affiliate link to buy the stuff you’re already buying, or peruse our Amazon store for DVD’s, Blurays, posters, and more Breaking Bad merch. We appreciate it!

  • How dare you!
How dare you dislike the premiere episode of the Greatest television show ever made! 3 or 4 on the Breaking Bad scale! Jesus Christ!
Great episode, nothing happened which I thought could happen, which is something I adore about this show (including the S2 737 crash)
In the stunning opening scene, I first thought it was Mike at the Denny’s, until the bacon made a 52 and my jaw dropped.
Unlike you bastards, Walter White is still the most interesting, awesome character on any show ever made. Ever since Walt died in the end of Crawl Space, Hiesenburg reign of terror has been amazing. Sure, the magnets were a little corny, but come on, this is classic season 1/2 Breaking Bad.
The scene with Ted nearly made me squeemish, Skyler is becoming such a dynamic character. Before the end of scene, I thought Ted was going to ask her for a hospital handjob for his silence, like Hank and Marie in Half Measure.
Overall, this episode is great, my 7th favorite of the whole show. My only problem with this episode is the lack of screen time in which Breaking Bad appeared, a mere 43 minutes. Compared to season 1′s average 49 minutes, s2′s 48, s3 and 4′s 47, this is kind of dissapointing, like Walking Dead season 2 length. An ad for the shitty Small Town Security (so bad. so bad) immediantly following the opening scene. This has only happened once on AMC to my memory, after WD’s Triggerfinger, after Lori was trapped in the car by the zombie. If the midseason premiere is less than 47 minutes long, I’m writing a letter to AMC.
    Great podcast

  • durr. I was like why does the other guys voice sound so different? I’m use to listening to your GoT podcast. Didn’t realise this one is Jim & A.Ron no MadBrew.

just thought I’d share my stupidity.

  • Hey Jim & A. Ron,
I’ve been listening to your podcasts for over a year. I started with Breaking Good and followed your recommendations to watch Walking Dead, Justified, and Mad Men. Now I listen to three or four Bald Move podcasts, including The Night’s Watch. Also support you guys through your Amazon affiliate link!

I was excited about the return of Breaking Good, only to be very disappointed when I listened to it. Each of you guys has your #1 show, and since Jim prefers Breaking Bad, I look forward to hearing more of his voice on this particular cast. I was surprised with how dismissive of the premier you guys seemed. I thought it was a great beginning to the end, and I’ve watched it nearly a dozen times. From the formation of a tenuous trio with Mike, to the delicate development of Walt’s and Jesse’s characters post-Gus, to the stellar humor at the scrap metal lot… this episode was very good.

My main gripe is with the comparison of this show to Mad Men. For me, it’s like comparing “Y: The Last Man” to “The Old Man and the Sea.” I like both, and they both have their own merits. Mad Men is a good series, and I recommend it. However, Breaking Bad is a master class in great storytelling, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. The characters in this show will stay with me for years to come, much like Hemingway’s old man. I can’t say the same for Mad Men (except maybe Peggy). Once Mad Men is over, there will be another good series to fill its shoes. But there will never be another Breaking Bad. It’s in a totally different league.

    Your loyal listener, etc. etc.

  • They can’t all be perfect episodes. I think you guys will be happier with my reaction to “Madrigal”. Hope you stick around for tomorrow’s podcast.
