207 – “Pretty Much Dead Already” – Watching Dead
Turns out that the midseason finale went out with a bang. Several dozen, actually! Before we get into the recap, we consider an article from The Atlantic on five ways The Walking Dead can be improved. It’s pretty good, even if you think The Walking Dead is just fine as is.
Then we break down the action as we consider effective Carol pick-up lines, Rick Jr., Glen getting a spinal upgrade, the Dale/Shane group dichotomy, the finer points of zombie walking, and Rick’s record versus undead little girls.

Anyone saying Scott Wilson (Hershel) was anything BUT spectacular at the end of this episode is .. as they say .. cra cra. The look of loss and realization on his face was epic.
The ending of this episode was an amazing way to reset the show back to a zombie series. It was emotional, powerful, and brought the sophia arc to a most radical end. The moment when maggie simply motioned to Glen to shoot his gun it was emotional and felt so real and raw. She was accepting stuff in a very serious, life changing, way.
Anyways keep up the podcast – dig hearing you 2 break down each episode. Although with this episode me and my gf were too blown away to calmly discuss it. We just shouted about how amazing the ending was and how happy we were to see Sophia be donskis.
I actually said that I might or might not have had a slight orgasm during the ending.

Hershel was definitely powerful and awesome. Though, it doesn’t surprise me that some people found his refraining from taking Rick’s zombie leash strange – since Rick was actively trying to stop Shane from opening the barn.
However, at this point, I suspect that Hershel really has had doubts the whole time about curing the walkers and was merely hopeful once his family members starting falling victim.
I think in that moment – especially after Shane’s demonstration of shooting the female zombie in the stomach multiple times – Hershel finally realized he needed to accept that these people are dead – and allows Shane to open the barn door for the final closure he’s really always known he needed.
I’m obviously not basing this on any explicit moments in the show, but it’s just the impression I got… If that makes sense..

totally makes sense. he gave up after Shane shoved the truth down his throat. either way .. ah … mazing.
although I still don’t like Shane – he just happens to be the only one with the ‘zombie movie survivor’ mindset.

You were wondering about the ratings, and TV By the Numbers seems to be a pretty good rundown. I don’t think it’s counting both hours (as it’s now followed by Hell on Wheels.
The Walking Dead is definitely the #1 show on Sundays, with no other show even coming close. If you look at the top 25 cable shows, it’s the #1 fiction show, only being beaten by NFL games and if you compare to the top 25 broadcast shows it would come in second behind Two and a Half Men and is only beat by sports, again.
