Sorry I’m late today, I had this thing all wrapped up and then JUST as I was about to hit “publish” I got kidnapped by some ex-cop and held in an underground meth superlab until my boss came by and slit a co-workers throat. Wait, no, that’s what I WISHED happened. In reality, I got caught up in a meeting that was supposed to be 15 minutes and turned into 2 hours. A much worse fate, right?
First up is Anthony Domestico with Commonweal Magazine with a thought provoking article on the theme of “evil” in breaking bad. I’m pretty sure this is a religious site, but I wouldn’t let that turn you off if you’re inclined to do so. I don’t detect any preaching, just literary analysis. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Gilligan compared to Milton before: “Walter bears comparison to the Satan of Milton’s Paradise Lost. Like Satan, Walter cloaks his motives in language that would be convincing if it weren’t so obviously self-serving… Like Satan, he puts his self before all others, even and especially when he claims to be doing something selfless. And like Satan, Walter shows us how attractive and ultimately deforming evil, and in particular its illusion of complete self-sufficiency, can be.”
Steve Kandell at Grantland has a funny recurring article mocking “power rankings” in sports, with the “Powerless Rating”. Each week he compares how impotent the men from various TV shows are, and picks a winner. This week, our favorite cancer-stricken chemist, Walter, wins “by an uncomfortably large margin. He’s one pocket protector away from being Michael Douglas inFalling Down.” Heh.
A Matt L. “Badger” Jones interview!?! Yes please! Timmy from Movieweb has a very short conversation with him touching on how dark things are getting and his ultimate fate. “Hopefully they’ll give me some kind of wonderful exit.” This guy seems like he’d by hysterical to hang out with.
Do you have cable? Do you want to be able to watch Breaking Bad, anytime, anywhere? Then TV Anywhere might be for you! Personally, I’ve been in the situation where I was traveling and couldn’t watch my favorite shows because the hotel/in-laws/whatever didn’t have the particular channel I needed or I couldn’t find it, so I think this is awesome.
Jay Russell with Gather has a pretty awesome recap of 402 “Thirty Eight Snub”. It contains two priceless screen caps of Eyebrow Man. He’s obviously seen more than just two episodes of this season (damn you screeners! ), and uses that knowledge to offer up some pretty keen insights on the parallels between Jesse and Gus. A bit spoilerish, so stay away if you want to remain pure as Colombian cocaine, but if true, it would be a nice mirroring of Walt taking on some of the affectations of the men he has killed, such as cutting off the crust of his sandwiches.
That’s all for today folks. We moved up from 107 to 49 (number SIX under the TV & Film category!) in the “New and Notable” section on iTunes, and it’s all due to you fine people. Unfortunately, it looks like some jackhole modbombed a lot of your iTunes reviews (marked them as “unhelpful”), so feel free to be “helpful” to your fellow reviewers to combat the hating if you’re in the mood. We also hit the magic 25+ fan mark on Facebook to get our vanity link, so again, thanks so much for your support. We genuinely appreciate it. As always, follow Jim on twitter @breakgood for more throughout the day, and if you have a take for us, email it! See you tomorrow.
