WHAT THE @#%* IS A GROUNDHOG DAY BATMANATHON?!?
Back in the winter of 2018, hosts of the Bald Move podcast network Jim and A.Ron, had a vision. They would watch the movie Groundhog Day… on Groundhog Day… on repeat for 24 hours… and live stream the entire thing. At the last minute, they boys thought, heck, since they’re going to be doing this ridiculous thing, might as well see if an absolute good can come of it. So they setup a donation link, picked a charity… and then set what they thought was a ridiculous goal of $10k. The Bald Move community wasn’t in on the joke however, and reached the goal at the buzzer of a grueling 24 hours of comedy torture by Bill Murray, Sonny, and Cher. Since they accidentally succeeded with the lark, they got stuck doing it!
Each year since, on the weekend closest to Groundhog Day, Jim and A.Ron once again take their positions on the couch for another butt numbing movie marathon, in the name of good fun, community, and charity. Over the years Bald Move and its fans have generated over $187k for various charities, including nearly $150k for the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund @ CureAlz.org. CureAlz has been Bald Move’s charity partner since 2021.
CureAlz is a fantastic charity, very highly rated by charity watchdog groups. They have a board of wealthy benefactors who cover all overhead costs of the organization, so that they can guarantee that 100% of every dollar the public donates goes straight to research leading to promising therapies to prevent, halt, and even reverse the terrible effects of Alzheimer’s disease. As of 2024, CureAlz has funded over 900 research grants with a total of $223 million. Over 1,400 published medical papers have been based on CureAlz funded research, and they have been cited by researchers over 120k times to date.
Each year, as a cap off to the Groundhog marathon season, A.Ron and Jim sit down with the fine folks at CureAlz for them to formally accept our donation on behalf of the Bald Move community, and then do a deep dive into the latest scientific updates and breakthroughs related to their Alzheimer’s research. This is a cause A.Ron is particularly passionate about, as losing his grandfather and aunt in the uniquely cruel and prolonged way of Alzheimer’s disease had a profound impact on him and his family.
Alzheimer’s respects no national border. It affects people of all races, religions, creeds, and social standings. It cares not whether you are a man or woman, whether your family has the resources to care for you or not. It can happen to anyone. To no surprise, many people in the Bald Move community have also been affected by this terrible disease among their family and friends, and each year hundreds of people dedicate their donations to the ones now suffering and the ones they’ve already lost.
As somber as the cause is, Bald Move tackles it with humor, joy, irreverence, and the kind of punchy goofy flow state you can only get with an all nighter. They’ve marathoned Star Wars, Star Trek, James Bond, the Fast and Furious Series, Lord of the Rings, Spider-Man films. This year they’ll be testing themselves with a battery of essentially every Batman film ever made, from Adam West to Lego and everything in between.
Please join them this year in their mission to send Alzheimer’s to Arkham for good. They’ll be starting at the bat-date and time of Saturday, January 31st at noon and going non-stop til noon on Sunday, February 1st. There will be exclusive merch, interactive games and prizes, raffles, laughs, tears, and things that can only happen in the wee hours of the night… and the camera and microphones are always on!
