204 – “Garden of Bones” – The Night’s Watch

A thousand apologies for the late post, it is entirely my (A.Ron’s) fault and I feel terrible about it. Next week we will be back on track and on schedule!
Until then, please enjoy our current cast, covering episode 204, “Garden of Bones” of HBO’s Game of Thrones. Mad Brew and I discuss the new, improved (?) Mountain, Tyrion taking ownership of one Lancel Lannister, Dany’s dealings with the mysterious Thirteen of Quarth (heh), Joffery’s transformation into Caligula, and Littlefinger’s poison parcel to Renly, Margaery, and Catelyn. All this, your feedback, and upcoming spoilers in the secluded spoiler section of the cast!

Hey Guys,
Just wanted to say I really enjoy listening to your podcast (left positive feed-back on iTunes).
Sort of like A. Ron I started “listening” to the audio books after the first season of the show. I just finished the second book for the second time and have some incite/comments/questions regarding some things you’ve discussed in recent cast and what we’ve recently seen on the show.
1) has to do with Ros. A. Ron, do you think the writers are keeping her as a replacement for Alayaya from the book?. Although they skipped Shay being hid through the secret door of Alayaya’s brothel (which is why I first thought they had made Ros a madam). Without that I still think Ros could replace Alayaya as Cersie’s (incorrect) revenge pawn, I saw in one of the previews Tyrion’s threat to Cersie “your joy will turn to ashes in your mouth”. which means Cersie will think she has Tyrion by the nards, and with Ros having a history with Tyrion (reflect back on slurping sound) it would make sense that she might play along if taken captive. At least that would somewhat justify keeping her for this long and giving her as much screen time as they have.
2) In your 203 cast you elaborated on a listeners comment of the possibility of Jon Snow being a true-born/high born Targaryen rather than Eddard Stark’s bastard. Not that I want to start a debate but just hear me out as to why I don’t think that’s a possibility. First if he was Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar’s son he’d still be a bastard, not a true-born heir since Rhagar was married to Elia Martel whom Sir Gregor later rapped and murdered. Also there is, Cat’s inner monologue in the books, where it is explained that her resentment of Jon stems, in part, from how much more Jon, as a bastard looks like Ned than any of his true-born sons. Obviously that would be hard to translate on the show, but with knowing that and what the book says of the Targaryens (all being silver haired and purple eyed) I’m not convinced that that is where Jon’s story is leading. Any more thoughts?
3) In your last cast you questioned Arya being a cup bearer in the books. That does happen in book 2, but not till after Jaqen has paid his debt. And it’s for Roos Bolton not Lord Tywin that she becomes a cup barer. I think this is another smart decision to bypass characters like Wheeze, whom (although great in the book) if they introduced, they’d have to write in scenes to give us reasons for Arya to want them dead, which is precious screen time for other, probably more important, details of other story arcs. Also I don’t think Tywin has any reason to think she is Arya Stark, even on the show because I don’t think Tyrion or Cersie would have told him that they don’t have Arya.
4) Overall I think the writers are doing a pretty good job picking which characters to drop, and when to depart from an original thread in the book and weave it into another story line to speed up the pacing of the show. For instance it looks like the Reed children will be left off the show but their influence on Bran will be carried out by Osha.
I also thought it was clever putting Little Finger at the site of the conflict between Renly and Stanis to speed the Tyrell’s getting to Kings landing.
And changing the focus of the Cersie, Tyrion military strategy conflict to the wild fire instead of having Tyrion stop Cersie’s smiths from making armor to make his chain was a good move too. Tyrions chain could easily be done without, but having wild fire will be a visual effects extravaganza.
Again, I really enjoy the podcast, you guys are doing a great job, keep it up.
